Extra Life 2012

Thursday, August 2nd, 2012

First post for a new blog! And what better way to start than with (hopefully) plans for a good deed. For those that have never heard of it, Extra Life is a way video gamers have been donating to charity. From the official page:

Extra Life began in 2008 as a way of honoring a young lady named Victoria Enmon. Tori’s battle against acute lymphoblastic leukemia inspired the Sarcastic Gamer Community in a way that is difficult to describe. Members sent in video games and bought gifts to keep Tori’s spirits up despite numerous hospital stays and three bouts with the deadly disease.

Tragically, we lost Tori to cancer in January 2008. Later that year, I asked my partners at Sarcastic Gamer if they would be interested in Extra Life, a 24-hour video game marathon to raise money for the hospital that treated and fought beside Tori. In 2008 and 2009 Extra Life raised a combined $302,000, 100 percent of which went directly to help kids like Tori at my local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital (Texas Children’s Hospital).

What it all means is that for 24 hours, gamers around the world will unite in a day-long gaming marathon, all the while raising funds for sick children. I’ve donated pretty much every year, but this year I wanted to go one better, and actually take part and help raise some money for a good cause. The charity contribute to the Children’s miracle network in the US, but I want to keep it closer to home, so I plan on raising the money for Crumlin Children’s Hospital. I’m hoping to stream some of the content online, as well as set myself some cruel and unusual tasks, all in the name of raising money for a good cause.

Extra Life takes place on the 20th October 2012, so that gives me plenty of time to raise what I hope will be a decent sum of money. I’m going to update regularly on my plans and how it’s coming together. But as with a lot of things, the more the merrier; I would love for others to help me out with this, and hopefully we can get a team together and really do some good. My thinking is that if we can get even 10 people to join up, and those 10 people even donate €20, that’s 200 quid right out of the gate.  So if you want to take part, or have any ideas for me, please let me know in the comments, and keep an eye out for upcoming posts :)
